It's all about sustainability,
new materials,
minimum waste and,
typography.

our story

Leather & Letters came to birth out of two reasons.

First and main reason is out of the love for leather. A great and beautiful material which can last lifetimes if treated correctly.

Second reason is my fascination in typography. Letters are all around us, they are beautiful, each in their own way. And everybody have their favorit letter, right? All products in Leather & Letters are related to a letter in the Swedish alphabet.

At Leather & Letters you'll find unique and high quality leather goods. All made of recycled leather offcuts from the furniture & shoe industry and proudly handmade in Sweden.

The material in it self is a sustainable innovation containing 75% leather and 25% natural rubber. They’re not only sustainable, but also naturally & beautifully textured.

The material of the products

Material made of leather offcuts from furniture and shoe industry and natural rubber. The product will smell, act and age as real leather and will maintain its natural leathery smell over its lifetime. As real leather, it will be formed by its contents and age as real leather, becoming softer the more you use it.

Even though the material consists of leather and rubber and acts as real leather, it has some qualities similar to paper. If the material is stored folded, folds may occur which don’t go away. Liquids can leave stains and it can be torn like paper.

What is natural rubber

Currently, rubber is harvested mainly in the form of the latex from the rubber tree or others. The latex is a sticky, milky colloid drawn off by making incisions in the bark and collecting the fluid in vessels in a process called "tapping".

The latex then is refined into rubber ready for commercial processing. Natural rubber is used extensively in many applications and products, either alone or in combination with other materials. Such products are plastic gloves, rubber boots, raincoats, balloons etc.

Recycle vs Upcycle

Upcycling is using various different products or material to create something new, but not the same product or material again. For instance, you can upcycle your old garments into shopping bags and give them a new purpose of use while recycling would turn your old garments into new garments. Upcycled items might still be recyclable at the end of their ‘second’ life depending on the item in question.

Our products are made by upcycled leather offcuts from furniture and shoe industry. The leather is first torn and then pressed into sheets with natural rubber. We use the term 'recycle' more than upcycle to clearly communicate that our products are made of leather offcuts.
